Life of Tree

Life of Tree is a speculative art installation which welcomes several people to experience.

This project aims at arousing people's awareness of how our future world might become and reminds people of the importance of protecting our living environment.

HEART BEAT by Charles Petillon

It's about an immersion experience, where the spectator takes part to the installation the same way he was taking part to the market formerly. The installation creates a connection between past and present.

During exhibition, viewers interact with CLOUD by initiating impromptu collaborations, working as a collective to animate “lightning” on the surface of the sculpture, turning the entire cloud on and off…

How it works?

By speculating how the future world might be, I designed a small potted landscape. There is an artificial tree with sand as its land to indicate the poor soil quality and the terrible environment problem in the future.

When people touch the heart beat sensor on the table, it will detect people's heart beat and send the signal to the lights on the tree, make the lights turn on and blink according to people's heat beat. There are 3 different color of lights, the more people join in, the tree will be more colorful. On a more poetic level, It indicate the future when there are no alive trees and human have to pass their life to the tree to bring the tree alive.

Future literation

There has a problem that the heart beat sensor is not that precise and accurate, so it may take some time for the sensor to detect participants' heart beat. In the future, I may need to find a better quality heart beat sensor and solve this problem.

In order to get more attention from strangers and have a better experience, I may build it into a life size tree installation and add more places for more people to join in together so that the whole tree would be more colorful and vivid.
